Mobile speed camera locations

Mobile speed cameras can be easily moved around the State and located anywhere at any time.

Priority locations have been determined using a Deployment Strategy which outlines six key principles.

  • Principle One: Operations will have road safety as its only focus.
  • Principle Two: Enforcement will be conducted State-wide at approved locations.
  • Principle Three: Deployment will be randomised across approved sites to increase the perception that speeding drivers can be caught anywhere, anytime.
  • Principle Four: Deployment will prioritise riskier parts of Tasmania’s road network.
  • Principle Five: A mix of overt and covert deployment will be used.
  • Principle Six: Consideration will be given to community suggested locations.

Improving road safety is the primary driver in identifying mobile speed camera locations. This means mobile speed cameras will be located at places to reduce the level of speeding generally with a specific focus on the riskier parts of the road network.

Assessing new mobile speed camera locations

When determining a new mobile speed camera location, the Department of State Growth and Tasmania Police assess:

  • the crash history of the road
  • road features which increase the risk of crashing such as traffic volume and alignment
  • operational speed levels.

In addition, this process assesses whether it is safe to deploy a mobile speed camera for operation.
